From the very first ball, when Ambrose pinned Atherton in front to a ball that broke back, England were under his spell. It was fast, furious and utterly devastating. He signed off for the day by bowling Thorpe with his final delivery to finish with 6 for 22 off 7.5 overs. England were 40 for 8 and the game was done and dusted. The slimmest of silver linings came the following day as England squeezed past their lowest test score by one run, to finish on 46 all out. Alec Stewart was top scorer with 18, followed by extras on seven.
